Co-Lab national launch in Ireland was big success

CO-LAB, the project focused on making collaborative teaching and learning a reality in the 21st century classroom, has had in May a series of launch workshops in each of the project's participating countries.

The central purpose of the workshops was to recruit participants to the CO-LAB project to help test collaborative teaching methods with their students, report on their experiences, and recommend what works based on an evidence-informed dialogue between practitioners and policy makers.

The first of the national launch workshops took place in Ireland. Our Co-Lab partner The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) held the Digital Portfolios and Collaborative Learning Conference in Dublin Castle on the 17th May, 2016. While mainly designed as a support for the second level teachers which are one of the target audiences of the Co-Lab project, of the 45 attendees, there were also representatives from the Teaching Council, the Junior Cycle for Teachers support service, the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals and the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.

Dr. Deirdre Butler, Senior Lecturer in Digital Learning at St. Patrick's College, Dublin City University lead a workshop involving all of the attendees on "Embedding Collaborative Learning in Lesson Design". Dr. Butler guided attendees through a discussion on how to design and analyse lessons that developed the collaborative skills of students.

Dr. Michael Seery, reader in Chemistry Education at the University of Edinburgh presented on and led a discussion about "Documenting student learning with e-portfolios", including the use of wikis, blog and introducing his involvement in using digital badges as micro-credentials for university students.
